In our fast-paced lives, it’s easy to overlook the spaces we inhabit. But to be honest…that’s a cataphoric mistake. Our homes should be the sacred space that we go to escape the matrix of the outside world. The safe place where we can fully allow ourselves to rest, detox, unwind to prepare for the day ahead. Where we eat, make love, nourish our bodies, get clean and make art. This being said, doesn’t it make sense for us to put an emphasis on the home? To make sure it’s the cleanest, most perfect space it can be for the sake of our well-being? We think so!
And the science can even back this up – the state and cleanliness of our homes significantly impacts our physical and mental health. So, as we strive for a healthier home, choosing non-toxic cleaning products is just one step (but a crucial one) in creating a safe and welcoming environment. So how do we do this, you may ask…the Mindful Mop team is here to help!!! Here is our guide to removing household toxins!
Step 1: Declutter for Clarity
Before we start talking about specific toxins to avoid, let’s begin with the physical space itself. A cluttered home can lead to a cluttered mind…we all know this to be true! Research shows that living in a chaotic environment can increase stress and anxiety. So, taking the time to declutter your home and organize your spaces in a way that promotes ease and calmness will do a lot more than impress your dinner guests.
So how do we do this? A wise woman named Marie Kondo once said, “Keep only what sparks joy and purpose.” When your space feels open and calm, it’s easier to create a truly healthy environment. We promise!
Step 2: Choose Non-Toxic Cleaning Products
One of the easiest ways to make your home a healthier place is to choose non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaning products. Conventional cleaning supplies are almost always loaded with nasty chemicals that can irritate your skin, lungs, and overall well-being. Even worse, some of these chemicals, like phthalates, formaldehyde, and ammonia, can build up in the air and linger in your home for days or even weeks, causing all sorts of chaos in our bodies like hormone disruption!
Look for products that are free from harmful chemicals. Many non-toxic cleaning brands now offer everything from all-purpose sprays to specialized cleaners for kitchens and bathrooms. You can even make your own cleaning solutions at home using simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice. Not only will this reduce exposure to toxins, but it’s also better for the environment and your wallet!

Step 3: Be Mindful of Air Quality
Unfortunately, the air in our homes is often filled with invisible pollutants. GROSS! From gross cleaning products to toxic candles, carpets, and even new furniture, many everyday items emit chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These can have adverse effects on our health, leading to headaches, dizziness, and respiratory issues over time. We don’t love…
To improve your air quality, we highly recommend using an air purifier, or multiple throughout your home in high-traffic areas, or where you spend the most time. Look for purifiers with HEPA filters, which can capture small particles, and make sure to regularly ventilate your home by opening windows when weather permits. Fun fact – Houseplants can also play a role in improving air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing fresh oxygen. An excuse to go buy new house plants? You’re welcome.
Step 4: Remove Toxic Household Items
Not to be the bearer of bad news on purpose…we just think it’s important that you know!
Like we previously mentioned, the average home contains a frightening number of items that could be silently releasing toxins into the air. Here are some common offenders FYI:
- Flame-retardant fabrics: Many new and trendy sofas, chairs, and curtains are treated with flame retardants, which contain toxic chemicals that can leach into your precious air. Instead, opt for natural, untreated fabrics when purchasing furniture. I can cost extra, but saving your money in medical bills in the long run? TOTALLY worth it.
- Non-stick cookware: I think a lot of us know this now, thanks to the rise in marketing dollars from companies like Caraway, but those good old convenient, non-stick pans coated with Teflon release harmful fumes when heated to high temperatures. So switching to cast iron, stainless steel, or ceramic cookware is a much healthier choice. And honestly, it lasts way longer too!
- Plastics: Certain types of plastic contain BPA, a chemical linked to hormone disruption. Minimize plastic usage by choosing glass, stainless steel, or bamboo alternatives. These are my favorite to-go and leftover storage containers: GET THEM HERE
Taking stock of these old items and replacing them with incredible, non-toxic options is an essential step in creating a safer home for you and your family.
Step 5: Embrace Natural, Chemical-Free Personal Care Products
Oh boy, we could write a 10-page essay on this topic, but we’ll spare you today and keep it simple.
All you really need to know is that personal care products like lotions, shampoos, and deodorants are another source of hidden toxins. A huge one. Most conventional products you buy from Sephora, Ulta, Target or the drug store contain parabens, synthetic fragrances, and other harmful ingredients that can be absorbed through the skin. Switch to natural, cruelty-free brands that prioritize organic ingredients and sustainable packaging. Even better, consider making some of your own beauty products at home!

Step 6: Monitor Water Quality
Clean water is essential for your health, DUH. But unfortunately, American tap water systems are a freaking MESS and contain pollutants like chlorine, lead, and pesticides. Don’t believe us? Look it up: Water Quality in the US by city. So what do we do about this? We install a high-quality water filter in our homes to reduce harmful substances in our drinking water.
In our humble opinion, you should also consider investing in a shower filter to reduce chlorine exposure while bathing, which can be absorbed through the skin. They don’t have to be expensive, either! Our favorite one is less than $50 on Amazon. 🙂
Step 7: Make Smart Choices for Your Home’s Materials
Here is another fun one! When renovating or redecorating your home, this is a FABULOUS time to consider the materials you’re choosing. While you’re selecting, look for natural, non-toxic options for paints, flooring, and insulation. Many conventional paints contain VOCs that can linger in the air for months. Look for low-VOC or zero-VOC paint options to reduce exposure to these chemicals.
Similarly, choose natural flooring materials like hardwood, bamboo, or cork over synthetic options like vinyl, which can off-gas harmful chemicals over time.
Step 8: Create Healthy Habits
Okay you did it! CONGRATS on learning new things and staying open-minded for the overall good of your health. One last thing to note here, is that it’s not just the products and materials in your home that affect your health—it’s also your habits. So continue to be mindful of the things you bring into your home, like food packaging, toxic candles, and scented products. Choose organic foods when possible, store your food in glass or stainless steel containers, and be cautious of synthetic fragrances in candles or air fresheners.
Incorporating habits like regular cleaning, ventilation, and mindful consumption will go a long way toward ensuring your home remains a sanctuary for your health. Okay we are all done telling you what to do! hehe
Making your home a sanctuary of health starts with a conscious effort to remove toxins and promote well-being in every corner. By following the simple steps we chatted about, you can totally transform your home into a space that supports not just your physical health, but your mental and emotional well-being as well. Clean air, healthy products, and toxin-free materials create the perfect environment for unwinding, growing, and thriving. Let’s all strive to make our homes a place where health and happiness flourish!
With so much love,
